The Castle Keep, a small stronghold in which the local authorities lived, formed part of the castle’s main Keep Tower.

This was built at one of the highest points and is visible from across the surrounding plains to the north of the hills and from the Atlantic, serving as a strategic and fortified centre.

 Sigurd I, King of Norway, spotted the tower from offshore and visited the castle in 1109.
