The initiative A Night for the Natural Park, which marked World Tree Day at the National Palace of Sintra, brought the community together around the shared goal of caring for the Sintra Hills. The strong public response, which enthusiastically answered the call of Parques de Sintra, resulted in the donation of 2,052 native trees that will help to reforest the hills.
Moved by the public’s support for this initiative, João Sousa Rego, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Parques de Sintra stated: ‘this evening demonstrated that we can count on everyone to care for this valuable natural heritage. We felt the strength of the community’s commitment to the future of the Sintra Hills, clearly reflected in these thousands of trees that filled the palace staircase.’
‘Parques de Sintra will soon replant these trees in the areas affected by the severe weather to support regeneration and strengthen resilience to climate change. We are very grateful to all those who visited the Palace and brought their families, their children, showing that together we can shape a greener and more sustainable future. It is with future generations in mind that we work every day,’ he concluded.
On this special date, the National Palace of Sintra offered visitors a unique experience combining environmental awareness, heritage and music. Along the route, entirely lit by candles, visitors were welcomed with live music performed by young students from Sons e Compassos – Conservatório de Música e Teatro, with string instruments, piano, wind instruments and voice.
Iconic spaces such as the Swans Hall, the Magpies Room and the Kitchen, among others, were imbued with immersive and intimate soundscapes. Classical and contemporary pieces resonated throughout, creating an immersive musical experience.
‘Tickets’ granting access to the monument consisted of trees purchased for 2 euros from local producers — a small individual gesture that resulted in a significant collective contribution.
