Maria Carvalho 'Margem'

'Margem' is the latest project by young drummer and composer Maria Carvalho. In this singular creation, the music of José Mário Branco is revisited through the lens of contemporary jazz, with original arrangements that place poetry and the spoken word at the heart of the musical expression.
More than a tribute, 'Margem' is a meeting of languages — between protest song and improvisation, between memory and reinvention. A project that celebrates Portuguese music and the power of the language, breathing new life into a repertoire that marks a key part of the country’s cultural identity.
Released as an album in October 2024 with the support of Antena 2 and the association Narrativa Aleatória, 'Margem' has already been presented on stages such as Loulé Jazz, Jazz em Tavira, BeJazz, the José Saramago Foundation and the Camões Secondary School Auditorium, establishing itself as one of the most sensitive and daring projects of the new generation of Portuguese jazz.
On stage, Maria Carvalho (drums and arrangements) is joined by Sara Afonso (vocals), Bruno Ponte (guitar), Juliana Mendonça (double bass) and Luís Lélis (piano).
