New electric buses now operating in the Park of Pena

19 May 2025

Two new electric vehicles have been brought into service at the Park of Pena, now providing the shuttle connection between the park’s main entrance and the National Palace of Pena. This initiative forms part of Parques de Sintra’s broader project to completely renew its passenger transport fleet, replacing hybrid internal combustion vehicles with fully electric alternatives. It represents a strategic shift that reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and service quality.

The decision to replace the previous vehicles with fully electric ones was driven by the clear advantages offered by electric mobility. In addition to greater energy efficiency, these solutions deliver both economic benefits and a positive impact on the environment and the quality of the visitor experience. One of the most significant gains from the adoption of electric vehicles is the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions—one of the principal greenhouse gases. By adopting this solution, which required the development of suitable charging infrastructure, Parques de Sintra is helping to reduce pollutant emissions and align with national and international environmental goals in support of a more sustainable future.

The route linking the main entrance of the Park of Pena to the Palace involves steep gradients, sharp curves and narrow paths. The new 25-seat vehicles (to be joined shortly by two additional 32-seat models) offer high performance and excellent manoeuvrability, enabling them to navigate these challenging conditions effectively. Featuring a modern design, high-strength bodywork, independent suspension on all four wheels, electro-hydraulic steering, regenerative braking (which allows energy recovery on descents), a low-floor structure, proximity sensors, independent climate control, and a surveillance system in which video cameras replace traditional internal and external mirrors—among other technological innovations—these vehicles offer both drivers and passengers a quiet, smooth, safe, and comfortable travel experience.

Particular attention has also been paid to accessibility: these buses are fully adapted for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring that all visitors—regardless of their needs—can benefit from high-quality transport.
