With the objective of ensuring all those interested may get involved with climbing and abseiling, among other activities, on the Penedo da Amizade cliff, and do so in the very best safety conditions, Parques de Sintra recommends prior booking before attempting to approach this climbing site.
Penedo da Amizade, located in the shadow of the Moorish Castle, and under the management of Parques de Sintra, provides one of the oldest sites for the practice of climbing in Portugal. The level of demand is high in keeping with both the surrounding natural beauty and the quantity of different routes available (72), with varying levels of difficulty.
Since 2012, Parques de Sintra has been surveying and refitting the equipment installed on the cliff in order to guarantee the safety of its respective users. The opening of the pedestrian footpath from Vila Sassetti, which unites the historical centre with the Moorish Castle, also extended to the placing of information panels designed for those using the cliff and correspondingly with details about the climbing routes and the recommended safety practices for those participating in this sporting activity.
Furthermore, also with safety concerns in mind, two other initiatives recently took place. The first brought together several climbing groups for a clarification session on the safe usage of Penedo da Amizade, which counted upon the presence of two speakers who detailed the historical development of climbing on this site and the survey carried out on the climbing equipment. The second initiative involved a technical meeting with members of the ANPC – the National Civil Defence Authority for recognition of the site and discussions around the potential rescue measures to enact in case of injury or similar.
The decision to encourage prior booking stems from ensuring the best experience possible to each user of this site as well as guaranteeing the maximum level of safety to all participants. Within this framework, the ANPC is informed of all bookings made in order to facilitate any intervention and the provision of the right means in case of any need.
