Demonstration "Horses in the Forests of SIntra - Tradition and Sustainbility"
Location: Pena Farm in the Park of Pena
In 2010, Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua launched a project aimed at reintroducing traditional and environmentally sustainable techniques when it comes to the exploration and maintenance of its properties. The most innovative component of the project is the use of Ardennes horses, which are trained for forest work and which respond to a variety of verbal commands. The project is playing a crucial role in the restoration of a socio-cultural heritage that has not only been lost in Serra de Sintra, but also in the rest of Portugal.
As part of these demonstrations, the animals' handlers will demonstrate how they work in the forest, namely through strength exercises (pulling large tree trunks), precision exercises (stacking logs in a certain order), balance exercises (one log on top of another) and pulling logs through trees (avoiding obstacles). The objective of this type of work is to minimise any harmful effects on the environment by avoiding the use of tractors, which damage vegetation and young plants and trees.
Demonstrations will be held every Thursday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at the Pena Farm (Park of Pena).
Days: 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th of February
Duration: 1h
Participants: Everybody
Fee: Free (upon purchasing a ticket for entry into the Park of Pena)
