Publisher: Parques de Sintra, November 2012
A publication resulting from a study carried out by the authors on the species of mushrooms growing in the Sintra hills and lasting over eighteen months across the extent of the parks of Monserrate, Capuchos and Pena. This study resulted in the collection of 395 samples, the identification of 156 different species of which 65 were identified for the very first time in the Sintra region and 17 for the very first time anywhere in Portugal. The species were then catalogued photographically and described in a fashion designed to ensure that not only a scientist but also a layman might be able to recognise them. Beyond the description of the species, illustrated with photographs taken at the point of collection, each species gets the etymology of its scientific name detailed and, whenever known, their common names in Portuguese, French and English. The publication furthermore includes advice on preserving the biodiversity and the consumption of these species. With the publication of this guide, Parques de Sintra aims to awaken interest in the diversity of mushrooms in Sintra, raising public awareness about nature conservation and avoiding the unrestrained harvesting that might jeopardise the equilibrium of the forest ecosystem.
